Have you ever wondered why the two flat prongs on plugs have holes in them?
According to
www.howstuffworks.com and
www.straightdope.com, there are four reasons for these holes.
- Bumps inside the outlet grip the holes so that the plug fits more securely.
- The holes allow the appliance or device to be locked-out by placing a tie or lock through one or both of the holes.
- The holes are used to hold the prongs in place while the plastic part of the plug is molded to them.
- There is a small savings in raw materials.
